Aston Villa have confirmed they have rejected an increased bid from Liverpool for midfielder Gareth Barry.

Villa had already rejected three previous bids by The Reds for their 27yr old captain, who was disciplined by the club on Wednesday for speaking out against manager Martin O'Neill.

Villa also denied press reports that this was a Â£17million bid.

'The report in today's paper of a Â£17million offer for Gareth Barry is inaccurate,' read a statement of the club's official website.

'The club have received a renewed offer from Liverpool for the player but that still falls well short of Aston Villa's evaluation, and has subsequently been rejected.'
