Newell's Old Boys kicked off the Argentine Clausura championship with a comfortable 2-0 victory over San Lorenzo at the Nuevo Gasometro stadium, in Buenos Aires.
San Lorenzo, who won the Clausura Championship last year, were reduced to ten men in the fourth minute, after a violent tackle from Jorge Ortiz.
Newell's seemed to take advantage of their numerical advantage, and dominated their opponents, particularly in the midfield, where Matias Donnet and Hernan Bernardello were very impressive.
They created a number of clear opportunities to go ahead, but were kept out by San Lorenzo goalkeeper Agustin Orion.
Seven minutes into the second half Nicolas Spolli put Newell's ahead, with a well taken goal, after a lapse in the San Lorenzo defense.
Ten minutes later Donnet reduced Newell's to ten men, after a dangerous tackle on San Lorenzo midfielder Daniel Bilos, who had to receive treatment for a cut to the head.
In the 28th minute Santiago Salcedo doubled Newell's lead, with a brilliant lob over Orion that went in off the crossbar.
Newell's picked up a vital victory, as they look to escape from possible relegation to the Second Division, because of their disastrous campaign last year.
Big shock, hopefully there will be more shocks over the weekend!"giggle"
