RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Gremio fired coach Vagner Mancini despite an unbeaten record.
Celso Roth, a two-time former coach, will return to the club next week and manage the team during the rest of the Rio Grande do Sul state championship, the club said Friday.
Mancini took over as coach this year and led the team to four wins and two draws in six games. But Gremio executives reportedly were unhappy at the team's apparent apathy in a 1-0 victory over modest Jacira in the Brazil Cup opener last week.
"We played badly, I'm not satisfied," the club's soccer director Paulo Pelaipe said after the game. "This isn't the Gremio we know or want."
Gremio, which won the national championship in 1981 and '96, is in second place in its group in the state championship and a probable qualifier for the final four that will decide the title.
