The latest hot prospect to roll off the Santos production line is 18 year old Tiago Luis Martins following in the footsteps of the likes of Pele and Robinho. If anything Tiago Luis is more similar to Ronaldo, the Brazilian one, as he has the ability both to be in the right place at the right time, to score with tap ins, and the ability to beat defenders with pace and skill.
He has been impressing in this season’s Sao Paulo State Championship, where he has been scoring some great individual goals.
He has been catching the attention of many of Europe’s finest, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, England’s “big fourâ€, and both Milan clubs. Inter Milan have apparently already made an approach for the Ribeirao Preto born player.
Tiago Luis scored his first two goals for the Santos first team in the Sao Paulo State Championship game against Bragantino, with two very assured finishes. Shown here….
This video just gives an example of how mature this young player is, and even at his young age, I would say he is definitely ready for a move to Europe, even with m being as opposed as I am to South Americans moving to Europe to soon.
He is a respectable 5ft 9, and as a result, he is not easily pushed off the ball, and has a great ability to push the ball past the defender, and using his electric pace to burn past him, and latch onto the ball, and even after these lung bursting runs, has the composure to finish with such ease. Many of the goals he’s scored since January in the Sao Paulo State Championship are similar to this, with great skill and precision, either latching onto passes, or breezing past defenders.
Real Madrid fans already seem to think they have already got him, but at the moment, this story is rubbish. He did apparently go to Madrid to have talks with Real, but this is currently unconfirmed.
At the moment, he is apparently not officially classed as a professional player, so he will not be tied to a contract at the moment, so Santos will have to move quickly to secure him to the club, and they would be well advised to do so, as once they secure him to a professional contract, they will be able to get a very good price for him, when they inevitably sell him. There is a snag with contract negotiations at the moment because Santos are refusing to give him the money he is asking for. This is either stupidity, or they just can’t afford to keep him, which is understandable taking into account how financially unstable South American clubs are. Tiago has declared his intentions to stay at the club, but if the money issue isn’t resolved, anything could happen. He accepted the terms offered in a short term contract because of his support for the club, but they are not really holding up their side of the bargain.
Reports have come out saying that the player and the club have reached a new contract agreement, but this is so far unconfirmed.
Inter apparently wanted him to join them this summer, but I’m not sure that a move to Italy would be good for such a good attacking player, and Inter are still annoyed that weren’t able to sign wonderkid Alexandre Pato, who eventually moved to city rivals AC.
Again, it will be interesting to see how this one pans out, because if Santos play the sensible card, they could get a price of around £15m for him. Watch out for this one, he’s a real talent for the future. You heard it here first.
