Default Flamengo down Botafogo for Guanabara Cup

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Substitute striker Diego Tardelli scored in injury time for Flamengo to beat Botafogo 2-1 and win its second consecutive Guanabara Cup in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Tardelli netted the winner one minute into second-half injury time, beating Botafogo goalkeeper Juan Castillo to the far post.

Tardelli, a former Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven player, had entered the match less than 10 minutes earlier in front of more than 80,000 fans at Maracana.

"This moment will stay with me for the rest of my life," Tardelli said. "To enter the match and score the winning goal is sensational."

The victory gave Flamengo, Brazil's most popular club, its 18th Guanabara Cup, the most by any club.

Botafogo nearly equalized just before the final whistle, but forward Fabio's header struck the post.

Striker Wellington Paulista put Botafogo on the board in the 28th minute, beating two defenders at the top of the area before firing a low right-footer past Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno.

Flamengo equalized with a penalty kick converted by midfielder Ibson in the 62nd after Argentine defender Alexis Ferrero fouled Flamengo's Fabio Luciano.

Flamengo striker Souza and Botafogo midfielder Ze Carlos were both ejected after getting into an altercation following the goal.

Botafogo, the 2006 Guanabara Cup champion, went another man down in the 73rd after midfielder Lucio Flavio committed a hard foul.

Botafogo players complained about the refereeing, and club president Bebeto de Freitas said he was resigning.

The Guanabara Cup is the first stage of the Rio de Janeiro state championship. Its champion automatically earns the right to play for the state title against the winner of the Rio Cup, which begins next week.

Flamengo won last year's Rio de Janeiro title in a final against Botafogo, which was seeking its fifth Guanabara Cup trophy.

It was the third time the teams met in the Guanabara Cup final. Botafogo came out on top in 1968, while Flamengo won the title in 1995.

In the Sao Paulo state championship, Uruguayan forward Alberto Martin Acosta scored a 59th-minute winner to lead Corinthians over Ponte Preta 1-0 in Campinas.

The result moved Corinthians to fourth place in the 20-team standings, in position to advance to the semifinals after being relegated to the Brazilian league's second division last year.

Second-place Ponte Preta, which entered the weekend atop the standings, had not lost at home this season.

At Morumbi Stadium, 10-man Sao Paulo was held by Noroeste to 2-2, dropping to fifth in the standings.

Sao Paulo welcomed back striker Adriano after serving his two-game suspension for head-butting an opponent but midfielder Richarlyson was sent off early in the second half because of consecutive yellow cards.

Guaratingueta jumped to the top of the table by beating Juventus 1-0 in Sao Paulo.

Defending champion Santos defeated Ituano 4-1 to remain out of the relegation zone and move from 16th to 11th in the standings. Striker Kleber Pereira netted a pair of goals and Colombian forward Mauricio Molina added another for Santos, which played a man down from the 20th.

Also, Portuguesa beat visiting Guarani 1-0 and Mirassol got past host Marilia 1-0.

On Saturday, ninth-place Palmeiras was held by second-to-last-place Rio Preto to a disappointing 1-1 draw at Palestra Italia Stadium, which was used for the first time since closing for improvements after last year's season. Third-place Barueri routed Sao Caetano 6-1, while Bragantino beat last-place Rio Claro 2-1.
