Palmeiras playmaker Jorge Valdivia wants to score on a more regular basis after getting the goal that took them to a 1-0 victory over rivals Corinthians in the Paulista championship on Sunday, as he knows this is required if he wants a place in the club's history books.
The Chilean playmaker was a big hit at the Verdão last year, pulling the strings in midfield, and his performances earned him a place in Placar's team of the year, the first non-Brazilian player to make the selection since Carlos Tevez.
Speaking to the same publication after Palmeiras' 1-0 win over Corinthians, Valdivia stated a desire to get on the scoresheet on a more regular basis.
"The players who score the goals are always favoured by the history books and to make history at Palmeiras, I know that it will be necessary to score more often."
Having scored three goals so far in 2008, Valdivia was quick to praise new coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, whom he feels has had a positive effect on his game.
"He gives me a role that allows me to effect the game where I see fit and he is always helping me in training, trying to teach me to be more decisive in front of goal. He is telling me not to overcomplicate things if I have a chance in front of goal, because otherwise the chance will quickly disappear."
Luxemburgo himself feels that Valdivia is an excellent player, but is seeking to work on a couple of his weak points in an effort to try and elevate him to the next level.
"Valdivia needs to worry more about the essence of the game and not concentrate on the opponents treatment of him and complain. Of the great athletes of the world-wide football, few have been able to obtain this, as Platini, Cruyff and Maradona did," he explained.
"He also has to be accustomed to finding himself in front of goal and we have therefore worked a lot on his finishing in recent times."
