The Uruguayan press were quick to praise Juan Sebastián Verón following Estudiantes' 2-1 Copa Libertadores win over Danubio in Montevideo on Wednesday.
Verón had a excellent game for Estudiantes, scoring the penalty that tied the game at 1-1 and providing the assist for Enzo Perez to score the winner four minutes from time.
His performance did not go unnoticed by the press in attendance at the Jardines Del Hipódromo, with all of the morning papers in Uruguay praising the role he played in taking the Argentine side to victory.
"When Estudiantes' future in the continental competition looked in jeopardy, Verón recovered his magic and gave a skillful lesson of talent to reverse the proceedings," said El PaÃs de Montevideo.
"His raised his performance to superlative levels and turned to balance of play with a superb pass to Enzo Perez, who confirmed the triumph four minutes before the end."
Estudiantes played much of the game with ten men following the sending off of Agustin Alayes midway through the first half and El Observador noted that "Danubio did not know how to take advantage" of their extra man, again stating that Verón was the man who made the difference.
"In spite of playing with a man down, the Argentine team were excellent thanks to the promptings of Verón," they explained.
Ultimas Noticas also recognised Verón's contribution to Estudiantes' victory.
"In the hands of Verón, a hard working and ambitious Estudiantes took the triumph away from Danubio who let a certain win slip through their grasp," they affirmed.
