Adriano scored twice in the final fifteen minutes of the match to hand Sao Paulo a vital 2-1 victory over Chile's Audax Italiano at the Morumbi stadium.
Sao Paulo needed a home victory to take leadership of the group, and started very strongly, piling heavy pressure on the Chileans in the first twenty minutes of the match.
They created several clear opportunities to go in front, but were continually kept out by Audax goal keeper Mario Villasanti, who was in very good form.
Adriano, who has been in all the headlines for the wrong reasons, since joining Sao Paulo on loan from Inter Milan, looked dangerous at front, but even he failed to beat an inspired Villasanti.
After the break the Chileans seemed to creep into the match, and they took a surprise lead in the 62nd minute, with a brilliantly placed effort from star striker Carlos Villanueva.
Sao Paulo were shell-shocked, but bursted forward in an attempt to score an equalizer, as they knew a home loss, could put them in a difficult situation to advance to the next round of the competition.
In the 69th minute Sebastian Roco reduced Audax to ten men, and this would change the course of the match.
Five minutes later Adriano put Sao Paulo level with a precise header from a Jorge Wagner cross.
Adriano scored his team's winner in the 84th minute, with an easy finish from close range, after a well-worked attacking move, to the delight of the 30,000 home crowd.
