LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) - Atlas became Mexico's third team to reach the main group phase of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday, losing 1-0 to La Paz FC but advance on aggregate.
Atlas won its home leg 2-0 last week, and on Wednesday confounded the locals with a strong defense designed to protect their lead.
The Bolivian side cut the aggregate lead in half in the 51st minute when Edgar Clavijo shot across goal into the right corner of the net. It pressed and created repeated chances late in the game, but was turned away by Atlas black-and-grey wall of defenders.
Atlas, who advanced along with fellow Mexican clubs America and Chivas de Guadalajara, joins Group 3 with Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors, Maracaibo of Venezuela, and Chile's Colo Colo.
