Cienciano of Peru scraped into the first round of the Copa Libertadores, after holding Wanderers of Montevideo to a goalless draw, and went on to win the series 1-0 on aggregate.
Wanderers, who needed to win by two goals to reach the first round, started very strongly, and created five clear goal scoring opportunities inside the first fifteen minutes of the match.
But they failed to capitalize on their opportunities, and Cienciano knew that if they didn't step up a gear, they would be in for a very tough night.
The Uruguayans dominated proceedings, but as the half went on they seemed to be lacking ideas when moving forward.
After the break Cienciano improved a great deal, and looked more solid than their Uruguayan counterparts.
They pressured the Wanderers goal, and almost went ahead when Japanese striker Masakatsu Sawa fired an effort that hit the right post.
Towards the end of the match Wanderers pushed everyone forward, in an aim to force the shoot-out, but although they looked extremely dangerous, at the end they ran out of time.
Cienciano qualified for the group phase of the Libertadores after their vital 1-0 victory in Cusco last week.
