Venezuela's newspapers were this morning united in their praise for Caracas FC, who started their Copa Libertadores campaign with a deserved 2-0 victory over San Lorenzo of Argentina on Tuesday.
Two defensive errors from San Lorenzo let in Ronald Vargas and Rafael Castellin to give Caracas a 2-0 win at the Estadio Olimpico; the away side ending the game with nine men after Cristian Tula and Juan Manuel Torres were both dismissed.
The victory gave Caracas an excellent start to their campaign in a reasonably tough group that also features Real Potosi of Bolivia and Cruzeiro of Brazil and the Venezuelan press were quick to applaud their efforts.
El Nacional opened their story by stating that "the surprise occurred" and described it as thus: "Caracas Soccer Club won against the Argentine San Lorenzo in the Olympic stadium in Caracas in a good beginning to the continental tournament".
Local paper Diario Caraqueño added: "The Argentines traveled to Caracas with the title of favorites to obtain the first three points in the first stage of the competition, but they were beaten by a Venezuelan surprise and performed limply on the debut of their darling Andrés D'Alessandro".
TalCualdigital.com were quick to explain that the result was a fair one, stating: "Caracas, with a forceful performance, took a justified with over San Lorenzo".
Diario 2001 went as far to call the match "an impeccable debut" for Caracas and El Universal echoed those claims, calling it a "perfect day" and describing their performance as "flawless, with a triumph against a rival with as much tradition as San Lorenzo, one of the great teams in Argentina".
