CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Argentine clubs lost both first-round matches in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday.
Caracas of Venezuela defeated 9-man San Lorenzo 2-0 in Group 1 and Ecuador's Deportivo Cuenca topped Estudiantes 1-0 in Group 2 play.
Also, Audax Italiano of Chile was the last to qualify for the 32-team field when it beat Chico FC of Colombia 1-0, advancing on away goals after the teams tied 4-4 on aggregate.
Ronald Vargas and Rafael Castellin capitalized on defensive errors for Caracas.
Vargas scored in the 39th minute after intercepting a pass and Castellin sent a rebound off goalkeeper Agustin Orion into the net in the 70th to the delight of the crowd in the Venezuelan capital's Olympic Stadium.
San Lorenzo's offense suffered when Cristian Tula was ejected for a foul against Pablo Bastianini in the 42nd minute, then Juan Manuel Torres was sent off with his second yellow card.
Mauricio Ferradas' goal at the end of the first half, set up by Xavier Toledo, gave Deportivo Cuenca all it needed to win 1-0 against Estudiantes, which was listless at 2,560 meters (8,400 feet) above sea level.
Marcelo Broli scored in the last minute for Audax Italiano to beat Colombia's Chico FC 1-0, and into the group phase.
Midfielder Carlos Villanueva dribbled past two Colombian defenders before giving the ball to Broli, who scored with a right-footed shot from the top of the penalty area.
Chico won the first leg 4-3 in Colombia last week, but Audax's one-goal victory tied the two-match series 4-4 and put it into the next round on away goals.
Audax advanced to Group 7, where it will face Sao Paulo of Brazil, Deportivo Luqueno of Ecuador and Aletico Nacional of Colombia.
