Santos of Brazil picked up a valuable point in their visit to Colombia to face last year's Copa Libertadores surprise team Cucuta Deportivo. While Flamengo did the same against Coronel Bolognesi.
It was a very intense match between two teams that like to play good football, and it was no surprise that in the first twenty minutes of the initial period, both teams created several goal scoring opportunities to go ahead.
Cucuta, who have a much new side when compared to last year, started very strongly, and pushed to the attack, creating danger for the Santos defense, particularly down both flanks.
Santos, who are struggling in the Paulista Championship this season, looked very dangerous on the counterattack, but were unable to break through a resilient Cucuta defense, that stood firm.
After the break Santos played some good football, but Kleber failed to capitalize on a number of clear opportunities that fell to him.
In the 75th minute the best opportunity of the match fell to the former Club America ace, but he blasted the ball over the crossbar.
Santos pushed forward in an aim to snatch a late victory, but they were kept out by the outstanding form of Cucuta goalkeeper Leandro Castellanos.
The 35,000 fans that packed the stadium, were very disappointed with the lacklustre performance of their team.
In the earlier match Flamengo of Rio de Janeiro recorded an important goalless draw against Coronel Bolognesi of Peru.
Bolognesi probably created the better of the goal scoring opportunities, but never looked dangerous when moving forward.
Flamengo, on the other hand, looked dangerous with their runs down the wings, but lacked authority when it came to finishing.
At the end both teams seemed more than happy to settle for a point each, although Bolognesi should be disappointed by the fact that they dropped two points at home.
