Cruzeiro of Brazil picked up a valuable point against San Lorenzo of Argentina in Buenos Aires, after both teams fought out an intense goalless stalemate on Thursday.
San Lorenzo needed a boosting result, after a disappointing start to the season, but at the end had to settle for a frustrating goalless draw.
The Argentines piled heavy pressure on their opponents, but lacked authority when in the final third of the field, while the talented Brazilians tried to destroy them with swift counterattacks.
Ramon Diaz's side created several clear opportunities to take the lead, but strikers Gonzalo Bergessio and Andres Silvera were off target, wasting a number of incredible goal scoring chances.
Cruzeiro came more into the match in the second half, and looked very dangerous through their Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno, who charged past the San Lorenzo defense at ease.
Andres D'Alessandro was a key figure for San Lorenzo, but the talented Argentine international's timing was off when he directed dead balls into the box.
San Lorenzo piled heavy pressure on Cruzeiro towards the end of the match, but were repeatedly kept at bay by Fabio, who made a number of outstanding saves for the Brazilian outfit.
In Ecuador Uruguay's Danubio held Deportivo Cuenca to another goalless draw, in a match which the Ecuadoreans should have won the three points because of all their attacking pressure.
But the Uruguayans held on, picking up a vital point, that will be very valuable in the long run, as they look to advance to the next round of the Copa Libertadores.
Danubio, however, will need to improve a great deal to beat out either Lanus or Estudiantes de La Plata for a spot in the next round of the competition.
