Eagles boss Neil Warnock believes his side "need to get back to basics" after drawing 1-1 at home to Southampton.

The vocal boss could only see one team winning the game but the Eagles were made to pay for not taking their chances.

"I am disappointed as I thought that we were the ones who were going to win it.I thought they had a bit more quality in passing across midfield but I couldn't see them scoring.

Warnock added: "I didn't think they had many chances really I thought they were pretty in places but I thought we had the best chances to win the game."

Ben Watson twice hit the Saints woodwork in the second half but the manager thought Mark Hudson could have converted a deep free kick to the back post, minutes after seeing his side take the lead.

"Hudson should have gone with his head but instead went with his foot and the keeper got a touch on it to deflect the ball onto the post."

With six minutes left on the clock man of the match winner Shaun Derry made a mistake, which his manger believed was avoidable, and ultimately allowed the Saints to level the proceedings through Stern John.

"We got punished with elementary defensive error from Shaun Derry who really is one of our most experienced players. He was disappointed really as he should have put it in the stand and they can't score a goal from it."

"That is two games that we have thrown away by elementary defending and we need get back to basics over the next few games."

The draw at Selhurst see's the SE25 outift drop down to seventh in the table on goal difference but Neil is relishing the club's forthcoming fixtures, especially a trip to the Valley next Friday.

"We have got some great games coming up Charlton away and the top five away from home, it is really a great challenge for us at this stage as we believe we can get results wherever we go, I am looking forward to it.

"It is always a good atmosphere there, the crowd are vocal and exciting and looking forward to it."

As for the new boy Neil Danns who made his debut for the club in the second half, Warnock believes that the fans have only seen a glimpse of his capabilities.

"It is difficult coming on as a sub, he will be a great acquisition, he is bright, quick, and can score goals. The fans will take to him over the next few years, I am surprised he could not get in the Birmingham team, but that is our gain"

Mick McCarthy - "It isn't the end, it's the start. We will re-group and come again. But at the moment we are all bitterly disappointed".
