Default Shock FA Cup finalists

Team: Sunderland
When: 1973
Opponents: Leeds
What happened: This was very much a David v Goliath-style contest between First Division stalwarts and defending FA Cup winners Leeds and unfashionable Second Division outfit Sunderland. But the Black Cats rattled Leeds from the opening whistle, weighing in with hefty tackles and hogging much of the possession. In the end, there proved to be two match winners at either end of the field. First was Sunderland goalkeeper Jimmy Mongtomery, whose double save to deny Peter Lorimer is still regarded by many as one of the greatest stops of all time. At the other end, Ian Porterfield proved the match winner with his stunning first-half volley.
Did you know? It is the only FA Cup final to be played with an orange ball

Team: Southampton
When: 1976
Opponents: Manchester United
What happened: To most neutrals, the result of this final was a mere formality. Man Utd had finished third in the First Division while Saints a meagre sixth in the league below. Man Utd boasted the likes of Steve Coppell, Sammy McIlroy and Lou Macari in their line-up while Southampton didn't exactly have a who's who of stars. However, they were kept in the match by goalkeeper Ian Turner, who made a series of impressive saves to deny Gerry Daly and Gordon Hill. With Turner's heroics increasing, so too did Southampton's confidence. Mick Channon had a great shot saved by Alex Stepney before United's number one one was finally beaten with just seven minutes left on the clock, Bobby Stokes steering home Jim McCalliog's through ball.
Did you know? Matchwinner Stokes died at the age of 44 after contracting pneumonia during a round of golf.

Team: West Ham
When: 1980
Opponents: Arsenal
What happened: Cardiff will be looking at this match for inspiration at Wembley; it's the last time a team from outside the top division won the FA Cup final. The 99th final was decided by a rare Trevor Brooking header in the 13th minute. Arsenal dominated the second half and had the best of the chances, but could not level the scoreline. The Irons perhaps should have doubled the scoreline late on when Paul Allen was clear on goal only to be felled illegally by Willie Young, who only received a yellow card for the cynical tackle 25 yards out.
Did you know? Allen, 17, was then the youngest-ever FA Cup finalist.

Team: QPR
When: 1982
Opponents: Spurs
What happened: QPR were only in the Second Division at the time of the final and had just missed out on promotion that season; they ended up moving into the top flight the following season. As a result, Rangers, under the tutelage of the relatively inexperienced Terry Venables and captained by Glenn Roeder, were not deemed tough opponents for Spurs. On the contrary - the match was all square at full-time. Glenn Hoddle looked to have bagged the winner ten minutes from time only for future Spurs man Terry Fenwick to hit home an equaliser with just five to go. In the replay, Rangers were without the injured Clive Allen and the suspended Roeder, but they still put up a strong fight and were only outdone by an early Hoddle penalty.
Did you know? The following season, Venables was snapped up from lowly QPR to manage Barcelona.

Team: Brighton
When: 1983
Opponents: Manchester United
What happened: Brighton had just been relegated to the Second Division after a brief stint in the top flight. Despite their league demise, they put on an almighty show in the final, holding Mancester United to a 2-2 draw. Gordon Smith scored the equaliser with three minutes remaining and looked certain to bag a victory when clear on goal, leading to the famous excerpt of commentary by Peter Jones, "and Smith must score". But Gary Bailey's save from a weak finish ensured a replay. Brighton were in feisty form from the outset and dominated the first 20 minutes of the repeated final. They fell apart after that and United lifted the trophy following a 4-0 win.
Did you know? Brighton later started a fanzine called "And Smith must score" in memory of their near FA Cup win.

Team: Watford
When: 1984
Opponents: Everton
What happened: The biggest day in Watford's footballing history occured during Graham Taylor's reign as manager of the Elton John-owned club. The Hornets readily admitted they were punching above their weight in their only FA Cup final. Graeme Sharp deservedly gave Everton the lead in the 38th minute before a controversial second just after half time sealed the match. Many judged Andy Gray's combative challenge on Watford goalkeeper Steve Sherwood worthy of a foul, but Gray's header almost out of Sherwood's hands was allowed to stand.
Did you know? Watford FA Cup finalist George Reilly scored the winner in the semi-final against Plymouth and 20 years later had part of his ear bitten off by a fellow bricklayer on a building site, who whispered "Plymouth" in his ear as an explanation while doing so. Charming!

Team: Coventry
When: 1987
Opponents: Spurs
What happened: By the 1987 final, Tottenham had become FA Cup specialists; this was their third final in the last seven seasons. That previous form, not to mention a star-studded line-up including Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle and Clive Allen, meant they clearly had the bettering of Coventry. Things looked to be going according to the formbook when Allen opened the scoring after just two minutes, but Dave Bennett equalised for the Sky Blues before ten minutes were up on the clock. Spurs skipper Gary Mabbutt played the role of both hero and villain in the remaining minutes of the match. He firstly put his side back in front with a header, which was later cancelled out by Keith Houchen's flying header. But in the sixth minute of extra time, a Lloyd McGrath cross deflected off Mabbutt and into his own net.
Did you know? Goalscorer Houchen had a biography written about him two decades later called "A Tenner and a Box of Kippers".

Team: Wimbledon
When: 1988
Opponents: Liverpool
What happened: Liverpool had won the league title that season and were odds-on favourites to make light work of the Dons and clinch a second double in the decade. Various Wimbledon players recalled a certain positive vibe from the moment they came down the tunnel, during which the players screamed and shouted in unison to rattle Liverpool. Their bizarre antics clearly had the desired effect as Wimbledon's never-say-die attitude frustrated the Reds. The only goal of the game came in the 37th minute when Lawrie Sanchez headed home Dennis Wise's cross to launch massive celebrations from "the Crazy Gang". But Wimbledon still had to rely on Dave Beasant's later penalty save from John Aldridge, perhaps the abiding memory from that final.
Did you know? The Dons were unable to take up their spot in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season because of the ban on English sides in the wake of the Heysel Stadium disaster.

Team: Crystal Palace
When: 1990
Opponents: Man Utd
What happened: Steve Coppell's side were outside bets just to reach the final as they lined up against Liverpool in the semi. Liverpool had annihilated Palace 9-0 in the league earlier that season, but the inspired underdogs booked their place at Wembley with a thrilling 4-3 victory. United were also tipped to be comfortable winners, but Palace took the lead three times - twice through substitute Ian Wright - but eventually had to settle for a 3-3 draw. A solitary goal by Lee Martin in the replay dashed the dreams of Coppell, his players and their fans.
Did you know? Wright had only just returned from a broken leg for the initial final, but scored his opening goal with almost his first touch

Team: Sunderland
When: 1992
Opponents: Liverpool
What happened: Sunderland manager Malcolm Crosby earned fame on Wearside with a remarkable run to the FA Cup final having progressed from reserve-team coach to first-team manager. The Black Cats were the first Second Division side to make it to the final in a decade. They were expected to be overwhelmed by Liverpool, but actually had the better of the first half, during which star goalscorer John Byrne fluffed the best chance. In the second half, it was all about Liverpool as Michael Thomas and then Ian Rush scored to brush aside hopes of a massive final upset.
Did you know? In a mix-up, Sunderland were mistakenly awarded the winners' medals while Liverpool were handed the losers'. The players had to swap them over on the Wembley turf afterwards.
