Having completed 18 months of high-profile fund-raising for leukaemia charities, Geoff has taken the decision to set-up his own Foundation, the Geoff Thomas Foundation committed to the development and delivery of new treatments for patients with cancer and leukaemia across the country. The Foundation will have the advantage of being able to harness the power and popularity of football and Geoff’s close association with the sport, which has already given his work huge profile to date. Geoff is passionate that funds raised will go directly to influence the treatment of cancer and to make real progress with innovative drugs and treatments. Geoff is now working with the top consultants at the five leading centres around the country to identify what they need to make things happen, whether it be funding nurses, research assistants or specific equipment. Geoff describes it as obtaining a ‘shopping list’ of needs from these consultants. The emphasis will be on making things happen for the people like Geoff’s consultant, Charlie Craddock, who simply want to offer pioneering treatments to patients. Geoff’s vision for the Foundation is that it will provide a community for all the people who are experiencing living with cancer and, that it will build to reflect the powerful values and purpose of LIVESTRONG and its strong campaigning that inspired Geoff so much during his fight with leukaemia. |

After the success of his Tour de France endeavour last year, Geoff is now preparing to tackle this year’s Flora London Marathon. Geoff is running with his wife Julie and other friends and colleagues, but wants to go a step further in his fund-raising efforts by encouraging ballot-place runners to support his charity. The minimum levels of fundraising do not apply to ballot place runners, but this means that anything you can raise will be a bonus for that charity. In addition, running for a charity means that you will have company on race day, and may even find support from the knowledge that every mile you run is helping a worthy cause. Geoff said: “We are hoping to encourage keen participants to sign up with the Geoff Thomas Foundation to help us drive fundraising and bring more money to medical research into cancer and cancer treatments.†|

Geoff is in great shape since riding the Tour de France route last year, but insists that he will take nothing for granted after learning his lesson. He said: 'I did the Great North Run a couple of years ago and thought that was really tough, but I didn’t train enough for it.' 'It will be a personal challenge for me but we will also hopefully be raising awareness and raising money, which is more important.' Thomas knows the challenge will be tough, but he has already set himself a target time. He said: 'I’ve been challenged to do it in four hours, so I’ve got that in mind. But it depends if my legs will hold out.' 'I’ve only just started training and it’s early days.' 'I’m a bit of a sadist in that I like being intense with training then having a rest period where I feel relaxed.' 'I like the pain of the first few weeks where you are running through walls.' |

The 2008 London Marathon is set to be the biggest ever and Geoff wants to go a step further in his own fund-raising efforts by encouraging ballot-place runners to support his charity. The minimum levels of fundraising do not apply to ballot place runners, but this means that anything you can raise will be a bonus for that charity. In addition, running for a charity means that you will have company on race day, and may even find support from the knowledge that every mile you run is helping a worthy cause. Geoff added: 'We are hoping to encourage keen participants to sign up with the Geoff Thomas Foundation to help us drive fundraising and bring more money to medical research into cancer and cancer treatments.' Former Rochdale, Crewe (twice), Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley, Notts County and England midfielder Geoff has battled against chronic myleiod leukemia since June 2003 and established the Geoff Thomas Foundation to help similarly afflicted people throughout Britain. E-Petitions may not contain links to other sites but your search engine will rapidly find the Geoff Thomas Foundation for more information on this courageous endeavour by a well respected, brave, man, whose efforts to help others deserves to be recognised by the honours system. Which would doubtless also assist in raising the profile of the disease and the Foundations fund-raising efforts. |
