NEW KID IN TOON
Spaniard is lined up for Kev's job
By Alan Nixon
Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United future was plunged into fresh doubt last night as top Spanish coach Marcelo Garcia Toral was linked with his job.
Keegan has failed to win a game in his second coming on Tyneside and top-level sources in La Liga claim that an approach has been made for the highly-rated Racing Santander chief.
Known as Marcelino, the 42-year-old is also in talks with Santander about renewing his contract and has been linked with Sevilla - and now the Newcastle interest in him has emerged.
Marcelino made a name for himself in Spain by taking little Recreativo Huelva to promotion before moving to Santander, but that was just a step up the ladder before a bigger job comes along.
The brilliant young boss has taken Racing to a stunning fifth spot in the Spanish top flight, in front of far bigger rivals like Valencia, Deportivo, Sevilla and Real Mallorca, and he is the hottest property in his homeland right now.
Newcastle supremo Mike Ashley has been fretting about results since Keegan arrived and the 'Messiah' masterplan is not working.
