Default Keegan urges Owen talks in fear of drop

Kevin Keegan has urged Newcastle Uniteds owners to start contract talks with Michael Owen to prevent him being tempted away by a better offer.
Owens currant deal expires at the end of next season but Keegan beleives it is essential to secure his services in the longer term.Keegan said"We should be talking to Michael now,not next week.He is going to be wanted by other clubs."

Talking with regards to Newcastles league status Keegan still fears that Newcastle could be relegated despite recording their first win since Keegans arrival. This victory stopped an winless run that goes right back 13 games and to the date 15th December.
Speaking after the 2-0 victory over Fulham Kevin Keegan insists there is still work to be done and said"It doesn't mean we're still not in danger but it takes the pressure off after the players attitudes and my ability were questioned."

Really only toon fans can answer this truthfully, but imo with the drop zone so hotly contested this season,i dont think the expectations and pressure of the whole club and players has decreased with this win.Until Newcastle are 100% completly mathmatically safe the players pressure will still be of high intense.

I don't think Owen will sign a new deal until the club is safe. He would be mad to sign a new deal with the chance Newcastle will be playing Championship football next season. But then again with player power nowadays contracts don't seem to mean much!

I can see Owen putting a clause in his contract allowing him go to another team if Newcastle are relegated...he is faaaaaaaaaar too good for the championship and would not get an England recall if he were playing for a championship team. I think Keegan will agree with that clause to cover his own back!

Imho with there still being a whole season left on Owens contract talk of extending it should be put on the back burner for now,and if Newcastle do go down then they can cash in on Owen, but then if they stay afloat then they have the knowledge of premiership footie to entice him to extend the deal..

Sell him let him get injured again then some other club can pay his wages and that club will be Man City.
