Default Kevin Keegan

Stars fear Keegan is on way out
EXCLUSIVE
By Brian Mcnally 1/06/2008

Newcastle United stars fear boss Kevin Keegan may be driven out of St James' Park.

Keegan has been ordered to slash the Magpies wage bill by about £10million and senior figures in the dressing room are concerned his position at the club is becoming untenable.

The Toon boss has insisted to his players that he won't quit, but has left them in no doubt that he thinks his days are numbered.

After Keegan took over in January he warned that the size of billionaire owner Mike Ashley's ambition would be revealed by his summer transfer budget. And Keegan followed up by insisting Ashley had to ensure striker Michael Owen - whose £20million, four-year contract expires next June - was handed a new deal.

But it has become clear Keegan has been told he must reduce the wage bill and sell players in order to fund his transfer kitty.

A Newcastle insider said: "The players have real fears that Kevin Keegan could part company with the club sooner rather than later. It is the talk of the dressing room. The manager is keeping his powder dry in public, but the players are well aware that Kevin and his assistant Terry McDermott are far from happy.

"The manager has made it clear he is only really a coach and all the major decisions are being made above his head in London.

"Several back-room staff have been brought in without any reference to Keegan and he is understandably frustrated.

"But it is the Owen situation that has really brought matters to a head. Keegan has been asked to trim £10m off the wage bill and it looks as if Owen's £5m-a-year is the number one target."

and another one

DAMIEN DUFF will get a chance to become Sunderland's highest-ever paid player, even though it means taking a £10,000-a-week wage cut.

Newcastle outcast Duff tops Roy Keane's summer hit-list as the ambitious Black Cats boss looks to splash a £50million transfer kitty.

Toon will off-load winger Duff, 29, for £5m to ease a staggering £10m wage bill.

And Sunderland will smash their wage structure to offer a club record £60,000-a-week — still £10,000 short of Duff's St James' Park take.
