Default Jonas: I'll be talk of the toon

Jonas Gutierrez6th August 2008 By Ian Murtagh CONFIDENT Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez has told the Toon Army: You’re going to love me.

The Argentinian makes his St James’s Park debut tonight against Dutch opponents PSV Eindhoven.

And despite the Geordies having lost their last three friendlies without scoring a goal, there is little wrong with the ex-Real Mallorca flyer’s self-belief.

Gutierrez, 25, is convinced he is going to impress in his first season in English football.

“I think the Newcastle fans will like the way I play,” said Gutierrez, who was rested for the Toon’s 1-0 defeat against his former club on Sunday night.

“I have heard many great things about St James’s Park and the fans and everyone has made me very welcome.

I think the Newcastle fans will like the way I play Jonas Gutierrez

“That makes me want to give the fans something to be happy about and I cannot wait to play at the home stadium.”

With Michael Owen – along with Oba Martins – not expected to return until Saturday’s final pre-season game against Valencia, Nicky Butt will lead the Magpies tonight.

And Newcastle chief Kevin Keegan reckons the 33-year-old is perfect captaincy material.

Keegan said: “Nicky is an experienced player who has the respect of everyone at the club.

“He leads by example without being one of those who shakes his fist at everybody.

“He just does his job and says, ‘Work as hard as I do’. That’s the type who are good captains.”

Newcastle hope to sign Deportivo La Coruna’s Argentina defender Fabricio Coloccini for £8m in time for him for him to be unveiled before kick-off tonight.
