Default hull after Kris Boyd

Hull to gazump Cardiff’s Boyd bid
Jun 22 2008 by Our Correspondent, Wales On Sunday

PREMIERSHIP newcomers Hull City are ready to hijack Cardiff City’s ambitious bid to land Rangers hot-shot Kris Boyd.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones has stepped up his bid for the marksman with an improved offer of up to £3.5m.

But reports in Scotland say Hull are waiting in the wings ... giving Boyd the opportunity to play against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has warned the Bluebirds won’t be held to ransom by Rangers or made to take part in an auction.

But news that Hull are also interested will start alarm bells ringing at Ninian Park.

Hull boss Phil Brown is said to have placed Boyd at the top of his wanted list as he seeks to bolster his squad for Premiership football.

Wanted man Boyd, 24, has bagged 94 goals during his three years at Rangers despite failing to hold down a regular starting place.

He says he wants to remain at Ibrox and fight for his position in the team. But the recent arrivals of strikers Kyle Lafferty, Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka appear to have put Boyd well down the Rangers’ pecking order.

City boss Jones is a big admirer of Boyd and regards him as a vital part of Cardiff’s bid to make a push towards promotion to the Premiership themselves in 2008-09.

The Rangers strike ace is one of a number of top strikers Jones has targeted, with Manchester City’s Ched Evans and Sunderland’s Michael Chopra also on his wish list.

Ridsdale said: “Dave wants to get two, possibly even three, strikers for the start of next season.

“I will go for the most cost-effective options. If players should be too costly I will return to my original targets.”

The Bluebirds made £3m from their run to the FA Cup final and pulled in a further £5m from the sale of teenage wonder Aaron Ramsey to Arsenal.

But Ridsdale remains determined not to pay over the odds for new signings.

He said: “Rangers have made public their rejection of our offer for Boyd. We will consider our next move over the weekend.”
