Nacional defeated Wanderers 3-1 in their Clausura Championship opener, that was played in the Prado district of Montevideo, infront of over 15,000 fans. While their bitter rivals Penarol surrendered a two-goal lead, and were held by River Plate.
Nacional, who won their first match of the Copa Libertadores last week, played some very good football against a difficult Wanderers side, who have done relatively well so far this season.
But the 41-time Uruguayan champions had to wait until the 45th minute to go ahead, through a Martin Liguera spot-kick.
Five minutes into the restart Nacional's lead was doubled through highly-rated striker Bruno Fornaroli, who took advantage of a lapse in the Wanderers area.
But the home side replied five minutes later, with a well taken goal from their leading scorer Manuel Abreu.
But Nacional continued to dominate, and Liguera put the result out of Wanderers reach with another strike in the 57th minute.
At the Centenario stadium Penarol let a two-goal lead slip, and ended up sharing the points with River Plate.
Penarol went ahead in the 13th minute, with a powerful effort from Jose Maria Franco, and seemed to have put the result out of River's lead with a Matias Manrique strike in the 71st minute.
But River came to life, and Henry Gimenez pulled a goal back for them in the 78th minute, from the penalty spot, and Diego Silva scored their equalizer in second half injury time.
While Defensor Sporting defeated Tacuarembo 2-0 at the Luis Franzini stadium, with goals from Jairo Castillo (28') and Tabare Viudez (90').
