Default Good luck Tommy Burns!

Quote:
Celtic first-team coach Tommy Burns is determined to keep working for the Glasgow giants while he undergoes cancer treatment.

The Scottish Premier League champions have confirmed that the 51-year-old will begin receiving treatment after the cancer returned.

Burns was first diagnosed as suffering from a melanoma two years ago after a scan. He underwent surgery to remove two lumps from his leg in May 2006, before returning to the Hoops dug-out.

The Parkhead club confirmed Burns "intends to continue in his role as first-team coach and head of the youth academy" while he is treated.

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith offered his support to the former Scotland assistant manager.

Smith told The Scottish Sun: "I'm so sorry to hear about Tommy's illness - I have always had a lot of time for him.

"I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can get over this again."

Burns was recently a candidate to succeed Alex McLeish as Scotland boss, losing out to George Burley in January after being interviewed for the job.

He was appointed as number two to Scotland head coach Berti Vogts, taking up the role in 2002 and keeping it when the German resigned and Walter Smith took over in 2004.

Scottish football rallied around Burns during the first scare, which kept him out of the game for part of a championship-winning season at Celtic.

At the time, Burns talked of the possibility of the cancer returning.

"If it comes back again then you will have to deal with that," he said. "My friends and family will help me with that."

He also expressed the hope that his case might make people take action against the growing problem of skin cancer.

Burns said at the time: "Men in general don't really examine their bodies, their moles and marks, especially in the west of Scotland - not that we get that much sun anyway."
You can beat it Tommy, keep yir chin up wee man!
