Default Spring clean!

As we approach Spring Keano's having a clear out!
Quote:
SUNDERLAND manager Roy Keane will not allow sentiment to cloud his judgment as he builds for the future.

The Wearside club yesterday placed 27-year-old former Celtic and Manchester United midfielder Liam Miller on the transfer list as Keane prepared for another summer recruitment drive.

Miller was one of six men drafted in by the Irishman within days of his appointment in August 2006 and has now joined four other members of that sextet in being told he is surplus to requirements.

Only 36-year-old Dwight Yorke remains part of Keane's plans, and his current contract runs out at the end of the season.

Ross Wallace, David Connolly, Graham Kavanagh and Stanislav Varga, who arrived at the Stadium of Light along with Miller and Yorke on transfer deadline day that season, have all been told they can look for new clubs, along with later arrivals Greg Halford and Ian Harte.

Full-back Stephen Wright, a survivor of the Peter Reid era, is also available, while Andy Cole will see out the remainder of his contract on loan at Burnley.

Kavanagh, Halford and Varga are also currently also out on temporary deals at Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Burnley, although Miller could only join a Football League club on an emergency loan deal before securing a permanent switch at the end of the season.

He has made 21 senior appearances this season, 14 of them in the starting line-up, and scored one goal, a late equaliser in the 2-2 derby draw at Middlesbrough back in September. Miller was also red-carded in a 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December.

The Republic of Ireland international is currently recovering from a calf injury and had been pencilled in for a possible return in the reserves last night.

Keane has dipped into the transfer market since his arrival on Wearside, investing around £44million in total to date with Phil Bardsley, Andy Reid and Rade Prica his latest acquisitions during the January window.

The announcement came as Keane stepped up preparations for Saturday's trip to bottom-of-the-table Derby, where his side will again look for a first league away win this season after losing a club-record equalling ten on the trot. Last weekend's 1-0 reverse at Portsmouth left them in 15th place in the table, four points better off than Reading in 18th, but still perched precariously.

However, the manager remains confident the passion and attitude within his squad will provide the basis for a successful survival fight.

He said: "If you haven't got that, you have got nothing. If you want to be a top footballer, you have got to have drive and passion.

"That has no doubt helped us in a lot of games when sometimes our quality has let us down.

"But there is no questioning the desire and determination of our players, and that is what we will need between now and the end of the season because, trust me, there will be some ups and downs.

"It is about how you handle the disappointments, and we have had a fair few this season, remember.

"But the players always react in a positive way – you look back and even the disappointment of the Everton game (a 7-1 away loss], a bad defeat like that, and then we bounced back the following week and won.

"The players constantly get up from the knockdowns they receive, and that's a great sign for me to have."

Meanwhile, keeper Martin Fulop has been recalled from his loan spell at Stoke after just four days because of an injury to Craig Gordon's deputy, Darren Ward.
I'm surprised at Halford being shown the door:
Quote:
Halford signed a four year deal with Sunderland after making only three appearances for Reading in his short spell there. He was confirmed as Sunderland's first signing of the summer transfer window on 11 June 2007, and cost the club £3.5 million. Keane had previously tracked Halford and was extremely pleased to capture him, rating him very highly and expecting much from him in the 2007–08 season
He's still got 3 and a bit years on his contract!

OK Cole and Harte being let go was/is no surprise but Wallace and Varga together cost £1.1m from Celtic and have, at least, another year on their contracts. Connolly signed a 3 year deal in August 2006 and cost £1.9m. So did Kavanagh who cost £500,000. Miller signed on 31 August 2006, on a free, on a 3-year deal so he too a year and a half left.

Roy's 'dabbling' in the market has been a costly mistake methinks! Apart from Craig Gordon!

Default Ah, now it becomes clear!

Quote:
Sunderland boss Roy Keane has confirmed midfielder Liam Miller was placed on the transfer list due to poor time-keeping.

The Republic of Ireland international was told he could leave the club on Wednesday after arriving late for training on several occasions.

Keane, who once left three players behind on Wearside after they turned up late for the bus to an away match, had little hesitation in asserting his authority once again.

He said: "The problem is Liam's time-keeping, it is as simple as that. It is nothing to do with Liam as a player or as a lad.

"I have got a lot of time for Liam, but we set a very high standard at the football club and unfortunately, Liam has not been unable to match that, so we have put him on the transfer list and we will see what happens.

"You have got to be on time for training. If a player is late once or twice, well and good; if he is late three or four times, maybe well and good.

"But when it goes beyond five, six, seven times, then you have got to draw the line. In any walk of life, you have got to be on time.

"We had an incident last year when players were late for the bus, and you move on. We cannot wait for anybody at the club."

The 27-year-old played in the reserves' 1-0 defeat at Bolton on Wednesday night on his return from a calf injury hours after being told of the decision, although it remains to be seen whether he will be included in the senior squad for Saturday's Premier League trip to Derby.

However, while his future looks bleak at the Stadium of Light, Keane has not entirely closed the door on Miller.

He said: "Liam played last night and if he performs like he did last night and nobody comes in for him, then who knows?

"As long as he is under the roof, you feel, as with lots of other players, they have always got a chance.

"We have got a lot of other players who have not been involved in the first team for the last few months, but if they keep working hard, then you never know when they will get the opportunity."
Roy: "There's two ways to play it Liam."
Liam: "What're they Boss?"
Roy: "My way .................. or the highway!
Liam:"
