MANYOO LOOKING FOR NEW RIGHT-BACK
As the Gossip Column watched Wes Brown give away the ball in a stupid place for the umpteenth time against Switzerland, we issued a silent prayer for the Neviller's recovery.
ManYoo, though, have no such faith in an almighty power (well, other than money, like the rest of the soul-selling, globe-trotting...but that's a different rant), and so are being forced to find a replacement for the crocked Citizen Neville.
That being the case, the club have contacted Porto about the availability of Jose Bosingwa, the right-back whose £18m asking price has put off managers all over Europe. The Guardian confirms that hasn't dropped: 'The Portugal defender will not come cheaply, with Porto's president, Pinto da Costa, saying it would need an offer of at least €25m (£18.6m) to persuade him to sell the Congo-born 25-year-old.'
However, they also say Carlos Queiroz has discussed ManYoo's next prospective Portuguese player with Porto, and Sir Fergie may splash the cash.
Who remembers when ManYoo had a fantastic youth system that meant they didn't have to take this route?
KEEGAN WANTS TO SPEND
We bloody love Kevin Keegan. There's no messing, is there? Today, King Kev has announced that he wants to break the world record transfer signing. Not for any player in particular, just to have done it.
"It would be nice to beat a world record," wittered the former England manager. "It would be nice to amaze people with the people we're bringing in. We certainly have an owner who could help find the money."
Any ideas at all, Kev?
"If I could sign one player, you'd want to bring Thierry Henry back to England."
Right...we can see that one happening. All of a sudden Keegan's explanation of this January makes much more sense:
"I sat down with the owners and discussed the players available. It was a wish-list, not a hit list, and by the time we crossed off the people who wouldn't be available, there weren't many left."
RAFA ALREADY PLANNING NEXT SEASON'S FLOPS
As his club battles bravely to secure fourth place in the League, having only spent ten times the budget of the teams competing with them for the position over the last few years, Rafa Benitez has eyed his next big-money, probably overrated signing.
And is it us, or does this Daily Mirror sentence go some way to explaining why Rafa rates Dirk Kuyt?
'The 24-year-old has attracted the interest of Rafa Benitez after scoring 13 goals in 74 league games for Zaragoza.'
The 24-year-old in question is Real Zaragoza Sergio Garcia, available for £12m in the summer.
ARSENAL LOOKING TO SPAIN AS WELL
The Gooners are looking to Rafa's homeland as well. The Daily Star says Arsene Wenger wants to sign Sevilla's Spain U21 midfielder Diego Capel, as well as Getafe's Esteban Granero.
AND THE REST
Rangers will beat Celtic to the signing of Burnley's Kyle Lafferty by offering cash plus Alan Gow for the £4million-rated striker...Hull have pulled out of a bid to sign Stephen Wright from Sunderland due to concerns over his fitness...Sheffield Wednesday will make a surprise move to land Northern Ireland hitman David Healy on loan from Fulham...Bayern Munich hope to sign Sheffield United midfielder David Carney in a £2million deal...
