Wolverhampton Wanderers chief executive Jez Moxey said his club did all they could to ensure their match with Scunthorpe would go ahead on Tuesday night.

Referee Mark Haywood decided to call the game off at 5.40pm after part of the pitch became unplayable in the aftermath of a malfunction of the undersoil heating at Molineux.

Moxey told wolves.co.uk: "We had covers on the pitch and the undersoil heating on 48 hours before kick-off

"But a malfunction of the undersoil heating led to the system tripping out.

"We brought in some industrial heaters during the afternoon. However, despite great work from our groundstaff it wasn't enough to thaw out the affected areas of the pitch. It was the right decision from the referee to call the game off.

"To put it into context, this is only the third time in 15 years that a game has been called off at Molineux.

"We are bitterly disappointed for the fans especially those who may have started their journey from a distance."

Manager Nigel Adkins said he felt referee Mark Hayward made the right decision to call off his team's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Tuesday night.

The decision to postpone the game was not made until 5.40pm, after the Scunthorpe players and a number of supporters had arrived at the ground.

It came after a fault in the host's undersoil heating meant that one area of the pitch was still frozen.

Wolves brought in two huge generators and six industrial fans and heaters in an attempt to thaw out the frozen section of the pitch but it failed to have the desired effect and the match will now be re-arranged.

Speaking to the press shortly after the decision, Adkins said: "You cannot just play on three quarters of the pitch and not that bit, which is rock solid.

"They (Wolves) believed they had a chance of getting the game on, so they wanted the game on. Hence, they have left it as long as they could.

"Our interpretation was that the pitch inspection was going to be a 6.30pm - that is how late they were prepared to give it and how much of a chance they thought they had.

"They wanted to give it every chance to be on, so in that respect we had to prepare ourselves as best as we can for the game."

The Scunthorpe boss added that his side were well up for the game, and thanked the fans who had made the trek from North Lincolnshire.

He added: "Everybody was totally focused on it. It was a big disappointment for us because we were up for this game big time.

"I am devastated for the supporters but from our point-of-view there was nothing we could about it.

"We are in the hands of the home team, and the referee, and all we can do is focus on ourselves."
