Wolves Women are through to the third round of the League Cup after beating Sheffield United 4-1 on a cold and blustery afternoon at Goodrich.

The early part of the game saw United struggle to get out of their own half, with Wolves first hitting one post, then the other. Their persistence paid off in the 14th minute when Anne Johnson headed home to give Wolves the lead.

It was just three minutes later when Nicole Ledgister pushed the ball into the path of Johnson once again for her to finish in style, putting Wolves two up.

The home side continued to press, but could not find the target for the elusive third goal, with Anna Perks hitting the post from 20 yards out on 39 minutes.

On the stroke of half time Sheffield United were awarded a corner, which was cleared by the Wolves' defence as far as United striker Zoe Beresford. Her dipping shot beat Wolves' keeper Becky Thomas just under the bar, making it 2-1 at half time.

Wolves came out fighting in the second half but, with the wind against them, knew they had to battle to seal the tie. Midfielder Sarah Lambeth and Johnson both had shots on target well-stopped by United keeper Kirsty Johnson in the first five minutes of the half.

Sheffield United rallied on the hour, and were awarded a free kick, which was cleared by Shani Fieldhouse in the Wolves defence. In the ensuing attack, with some neat one-touch football, Wolves' Heather Clarkson (pictured)netted a goal to put Wolves 3-1 up.

The game was all but won, and Wolves were left to complete it with one more goal on 87 minutes, as Maria Beaney picked up a neat pass from substitute Natalie Walker and slotted home to make it 4-1.

The two sides meet again next week - this time in the league. The game will be played at Goodrich Sports Stadium, Stafford Road, Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, with a 2.30pm kick-off. Spectators should use the main Goodrich factory entrance.

I see skysports are starting to show the womens footie this year,about time as its quite good ........... i enjoy it anyway.

The woman footballs good imo played a good tempo as well.

When i was 10 i had trials for wolves and i met Yanky and unit they trained us i'll never forget that. i got picked for wolves but decided to stay for my team as i had to be loyal that got me no where as when i was 16 the team folded

Shame that,my eldest is into footie and wants to play for chelsea when older,unfortunately they dont seem to have many teams for her age where i live and her school only allows boys in the team..

Really? Theres a fair few girls team around here. Maye a new team will develope by you so she can join. I always enjoyed playing football was great i had highs and lows like everyone, i missed a penalty which stopped us reaching the finals of a cup i cryed my eyes out lol

good to see women progressing in football .
